Yeoyu : Abundance in Time, Space, and Resources

I always strive to feel some 여유(Yeoyu) every day.

여유 is a word that I struggle to find an exact English equivalent for.

It refers to a state of having extra time, space, or resources that allows you to feel relaxed and unhurried. It’s about having enough—whether that’s time, money, or emotional capacity—so that you can enjoy life without feeling pressured or stressed.

The word is not restricted to material abundance; it’s a mindset. Even if someone is not wealthy, or has an extremely busy schedule, if they have a lot of 여유, they feel relaxed and can find ways to enjoy life and navigate its obstacles.

여유 is the feeling of relaxation during a leisurely walk or a lazy Sunday morning. It can even describe the atmosphere of a charming cafe, where all the customers seem free from work and responsibilities.

For me, finding a moment of 여유 throughout the day is crucial for keeping me motivated and energized. When I arrive at my workplace, I try to get there early so I can have some 여유 time to settle in.

I bring my favorite scented hand soap to the restroom, wash my hands, and stretch my arms. Then, I have a cup of tea while listening to a podcast or reading the news. I don’t rush this routine, and it isn’t mandatory either. It’s just to get ready for my workday ahead, and finding a moment to savor and enjoy.

Sometimes you have to make an effort to have 여유, and this isn’t a bad thing. It’s a way to take care of your mind and soul.

In a fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook moments of 여유. But I’ve found that when I consciously seek them out, they make all the difference. Whether it’s a quiet morning ritual, a walk in the park, a quick chat with your coworkers, these small acts of 여유 help me reconnect with myself and the world around me.

So I encourage you to find your own moments of 여유, even if it takes a little extra effort. Notice them, cherish them, and let them remind you that there is always room for a bit of peace and joy, no matter how busy life gets.
